Space Invaders is based on an arcade game which was released in 1978, in Japan, later being licensed and offered in the United States and in other parts of the world.
It was one of the big names in the arcade category, and it has resisted for a very long time in the charts, before these games came out of style. The action inside is based on that old game, so it uses its graphics in the game area, with retro looking alien creatures descending from above.
The game has for its features multiplier wilds and re-spins. Otherwise, it’s a slot with 10 lines which pay both ways and with 5 reels.
What We Love
This is not a game where I would be excited by the graphics normally, but the retro look, which follows the design style used in the late 70s, is appropriate for a slot machine that is based on Space Invaders.
The game looks like an arcade machine, with the metallic housing surrounding the game area and the buttons. Naturally, it resembles a pub slot as well, since that’s how they’re often presented. The game has as symbols a couple of logos and images with UFOs and various alien invaders.

The company uses 10 paylines only, but it allows for combinations to form both ways on them, something which can come in handy if you’re landing three or four symbol combinations, going from either the right or the left and still capable of paying you.
The wild symbol seems to be an important part of Space Invaders. The slot will use these icons as replacements for others, symbols which can participate in new combinations by taking the place of a missing icon. By itself, the wild can’t do anything, so you still need regular symbols to participate, even if you have multiple wilds.
Multiplier wilds are also possible, activated when the laser cannon from the bottom vaporizes some of the space invaders. Should you vaporize the UFO, you will get a re-spin during which you get additional wilds.
What We Do Not Like
For me, the major downside right now would be the fact that the wagers require that you use the equivalent of 20 lines, instead of the 10 that are actually present on the reels.
You pay twice as much because of the “win both ways” feature, even though it doesn’t double your chances of getting a combo (the five symbol combinations touch both ends).
Worth Playing?
Space Invaders could be a welcomed addition to the slot market, one of the few games to have a unique theme these days.
