Theme of The Game

Suntide is, in theory, a slot machine with a Sun inspired theme. It’s not as evident on the reels though, where the vast majority of the symbols are classics (Bar, Seven, Diamond and lots of fruits).

The parts that do belong in the Sun’s category are the background image with a bright orange on it and with birds flying at the top, plus the Sun medallion icon, which is a special feature. Given the year of the slot’s release, 2016, it’s not that impressive and I’m not quite sure why the classic theme was chosen for it.

Developer

Suntide is a good example of a game that you will find in Microgaming’s collection, but don’t let that stop you from trying out their slot machines.

They have plenty of superb slot machines as well, with a lot more paylines, features and much improved designs. You should expect a fair amount of classic slots and older video slots though, especially since they’ve been creating slot machines for a long time, and they have over 500 games to their name.

How To Play It

You are asked by the game to bet on all 9 paylines which are available, and you can modify the total value of the wager by using the options available in the Bet section. There is another way to go about it, by opening a pop-up menu from the same area, and choosing how many coins you want to use and what their individual value should be. The end result is the same though.

I can’t really say that the quality of the symbols is bad, it’s just that the choice of things they show you makes them less appetizing than I’d expect from a modern slot. The theme is supposed to be inspired by the Sun, but instead we have the vast majority of the symbols in classic form, with fruits, diamonds, bars and sevens among them.

Special Features

The game doesn’t surprise when it comes to features it offers either. One of them is the wild symbol, which comes in regular sized on four reels, but it can expand on the 3rd reel.

If a winning combination gets the rest of the symbols required for the combo on the same line, and the wild is on that line as well (or it can be on it by expanding on the 3rd reel), then the substitution occurs.

The other big feature here is triggered by the scatter symbol, which as usual gets to activate free spins when it appears in 3+ locations. The exact position of the scatter isn’t important, as long as there are enough of them present.

You receive 15 spins for free here, and you can retrigger them if you land 3+ scatters again. It gets even better, as the expanding wild is now used on reels 2, 3 and 4, so you have much better odds of getting help from it.

Maximum Payouts

I would expect for a slot machine with only 9 lines to offer big prizes, to be a high variance title which makes it worth your while if you stick with it and your luck eventually kicks in. There are no multipliers to improve the prizes further, so you rely only on what the game gives you directly.

Summary

I wouldn’t recommend this game to everyone, it’s much too average for the slot market. It takes a little bit from modern titles, it takes others from the classics, and to be honest I’m not that thrilled with the end result. If you do enjoy this type of game, a modern 5 reel title with a limited number of paylines, then go for it.
