The theme in Poltava is an interesting one, inspired by a battle that was fought more than three hundred years ago. As inspiration, the developers from ELK Studios used the battle from 1709, which took place between the Russian and the Swedish Empires.
The Russians were victorious, if for no other reason than because there were just a lot more of them. Being the early 18th century, you will find that the symbols include cannons and soldiers with rifles, but horses are still part of the battlefield. The slot’s design is fun to look at, properly drawn for the most part, and including images which belong with this theme. One discounts the poker cards when saying that.
Developer
ELK Studios is a Swedish company, a slot machine developer that has started creating games in 2012. They haven’t quite managed to develop a large collection of slots, having only 7 titles released right now.
Poltava is their latest game, other examples that I would recommend being Bloopers, Taco Brothers or Champions Goal. Their games are generally good looking, and the features can be good also, Poltava being a decent example of that.
How To Play It
Your only decision concerns the value of the total bet. You don’t pick the number of lines, there will be 40 of them all the time, and you don’t change the number of coins either. You use a bet that is in the range of $0.20 to $100, a total of 12 values being available for you to click on.
Slots from ELK Studios deliver the option to choose a betting strategy. You can choose one of the four strategies, or you can play as usual, with a bet value that only you can change.
The interface is designed with mobile devices in mind, and if you’re used to playing on a PC you might not find it easy to figure out at first. The Spin button is on the right side, the other buttons being on the left. You get access to the Paytable info from the one at the top, while the bottom one gives you the betting options.

Special Features
As features, you should expect only options that are available in slots, but luckily Poltava designs them a bit differently, so they’re actually interesting.
The wild is first on the list, as it can be used to get you more payouts, just by having it in a position where a regular symbol would’ve had to appear in order for a combo to form. Wilds by themselves can still be useful, capable of paying the same amount as the highest paying icons if they form their own combo. They don’t replace Lion scatters.
The Lion scatter is one of the impressive looking symbols of Poltava. You get it in three positions if you’re lucky, which will trigger a bonus game called Flames of War, involving 3 free spins and the Lions in the role of sticky wilds.
Should a stack of symbols with soldiers, horses or cannons appear on an entire reel, you get the Marching Reels feature, with respins and movements of the stacked war symbols towards the right side of the screen.
Maximum Payouts
The payouts seem to be the disappointing part in this case. We get at most $200, from a wager of $100. The Horse symbol forms the combo which can award that much.
Summary
Poltava has quite the interesting design and theme, and that, along with its theme, might just be enough to make some players interested in it. The payouts will not help out in any way though.
