Great Wild Elk delivers a slot machine with a theme that has been chosen by developers before, inspired apparently by both nature and by magic.

The mix of symbols and the graphics behind the reels certainly show off both sides very well. On the side of magic you will find the huge tree, the fairies and the rune stones. Nature is represented by the forest and the Northern Lights, plus the four types of wild animals which appear among feature or higher paying icons.

The company which created Great Wild Elk is called NextGen and they’re part of the NYX Group these days. They’ve been around since 1999 though, so they have some games that they created before they were acquired.

With over 90 titles in their collection, and with new releases announced each month, I’m sure they will catch up soon enough to the bigger developers of slot machines. The quality of their latest games is better, and Great Wild Elk is actually one of the better designs they’ve put forward.

How To Play It

You’re working with 10 lines, which might not give you a lot of chances to take home a prize, but they will not require huge wagers either. You have 10 coins in the bet all the time, and the only decision you have to make is in regards to the value. You can use values of $0.01 to $2 for those coins, which would mean a betting range between $0.10 and $20.

Though not exactly standard, the betting area is similar enough to other slot machines that you shouldn’t have a problem learning how to use it.

You simply use the arrows placed next to the gold coins, and you change the wager. You can also click on the coins directly. The design of both the game and the interface is better than in other slots from NextGen, even than the one from their recent releases.

Special Features

The slot machine relies on scatters and wilds, but the free spins it offers don’t come from the former, but from the latter. There is also a feature which the game called Elk’s Light. If triggered, which is a random event when it happens, the low paying rune stone icons will all be turned into the same animal icon for that spin. The odds of forming combinations are much improved as a result.

As for the regular symbols, the scatter is one of them, and it is represented by the image of the Great Tree. The 3rd reel doesn’t get the scatter, but the other four reels do welcome it. If it happens that you get all four scatters visible on the reels, the reward will bring you 500 coins.

The wild is used only on one reel, the 3rd one, but there is a very good reason for that. The wild symbol will do its usual job, helping you form some new combination, but there is a bonus that it offers you.

Whenever it manages to act as a wild in a combo, you also get a free spins feature triggered by it. 4 to 10 free spins are randomly picked for the feature. Each scatter that appears during the free spins pays the same amount as you won from the combo that had a wild in it initially. At the end of the free spins, you also get a free re-spin.

Maximum Payouts

The biggest payout appears to come from a scatter symbol, which has to appear four times on just as many reels. The reward of 500 coins can mean at most $1,000 cash.
