Boulder Bucks is a caveman themed slot machine, which is offered by Barcrest. The game’s theme is not that unusual, quite a few other titles being released these days with a similar topic.
The inspiration for many of these games comes from a Hanna Barbera animation series, called The Flintstones. Boulder Bucks is no exception, at least that’s the impression you get when you see that the cavemen have a purple dinosaur as a pet, same as in the TV series. This is a slot with 5 reels, with 10 lines and it is capable of bringing the player a payout of up to $25,000.
What We Love
The theme’s idea is an interesting one, or at least I enjoy this kind of game, where you get a glimpse into the life of a cave man. The actual design of Boulder Bucks is nowhere near as impressive as I expected it to be. The symbols with cave people and dinosaurs or mammoths do look interesting, but there are quite a few others that are not as fun to look at, poker cards which are predictably made out of stone.
The slot has something called a Big Bet Spin, a wager of $20 or $30 which you can place, and in exchange you will get 5 special spins. The Big Bet Spins come with certain features. The $20 wager gets you the Boulder Smash Bonus.
The $30 wager offers you a Mega Boulder Smash for the 5 Big Bet Spins. The odds of winning something and to walk away with a decent prize are significantly better when you’re using this feature, the theoretical RTP going up to 96%, while regular spins can be as low as 78%.
Wild symbols are part of the offer in Boulder Bucks. They are regular wilds in the base game, and they can expand or become sticky while in free spins mode. Wild symbols do not offer you prizes directly though.
Access to free spins is obtained with the help of the scatter symbols, when they appear on the reels enough times. You can get 1 to 3 selections to make at this point, and you can pick one of the three types of free spins available. The available free spins have as patrons the Mammoths, Tigers or Pterodactyls. The Mammoth brings you 20 free spins and expanding wilds.
The Pterodactyl has 10 free spins, with wilds that expand laterally. The Tiger has 6 free spins, with expanding wilds which become sticky. The final feature is called Pick Me, and it triggers when you have the Egg symbol on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th reels.
What We Do Not Like
I didn’t like the payouts offered by the game, which go up to 250x or 500x, depending on the wager you’re using. It has a pretty bad theoretical RTP, as low as 78%, so the only way to play this game and have a decent shot at a profit is through the Big Bet Spins.
There are a couple of advantages to this game, especially the features and the theme choice, but the design quality is very low, plus the payouts are disappointingly bad.
